#Not Too Old

You’re too old! How many times have I heard that since I hit forty? And that was thirty-three years ago.

And too old for what, for heaven’s sake? To run a marathon? To become an astronaut? To fall in love? To get married? To write a romance novel? Well just look at the following facts to be amazed by some of the people who have not been too old.

  • The oldest Marathon runner in the world was one-hundred-and-four-year-old Fauja Singh who ran his last marathon in Mumbai in 2014. Sadly, he is no longer with us.
  • At the age of seventy-seven years and one-hundred-and-three days, John Glenn launched into space once again as part of the Discovery STS-95 in 1998, officially becoming the world’s oldest astronaut. The mission, with its enduring demands, proved to be just another day in space for Glenn.
  • British newlyweds George Kirby (b. 13 June 1912) and Doreen Kirby (nee Luckie, b. 6 September 1923) set a touching world record in 2015 as the Oldest couple to marry – aggregate age. The combined lifespan of the pair was a remarkable one-hundred-and-ninety-four years and two-hundred-and-eighty days on the day of their wedding which took place at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK, on 13 June 2015. The inspiring couple said their vows on George’s one-hundred-and third birthday, with Doreen being ninety-one years and two-hundred-and-eighty days. As far as I can tell this inspiring record still stands. But if you know better please let me know.

I don’t personally know anybody who comes close to this achievement but I am impressed by a guy from my local community centre who is getting married next year and is ninety-years-old.

  • Ida Pollock died at the age of one-hundred-and-five, just before her one-hundred-and-twenty-fifth romantic novel was published. As far as I can tell this inspiring record still stands. But if you know better please let me know. It makes my achievement of having my first novel (a contemporary romance) published at the age of seventy-three seem quite modest. ‘Not Too Old for Love: Grace’s Turmoil’ is in the final stages of proofing and should be published in the next few months.

However old you are, be inspired by the above achievements and decide for yourself what you’re not too old for. Don’t let anybody else decide for you.
